Dodecahedron loudspeaker

With their twelve loudspeakers built into a sphere, dodecahedrons have an omnidirectional radiation characteristic and are therefore used for acoustic measurements, where the directional sound radiation of conventional loudspeaker boxes is not desired.

Typical applications of dodecahedrons:

  • Sound source for building and room acoustic measurements on site and in test facilities
  • Reference sound source in vehicles (motor vehicles, rail vehicles) for investigation of sound propagation
  • Dodecahedron m|dod 250C:
    The small and very light dodecahedron is equipped with speakers of high sound quality and has a remarkable sound power despite its small diameter of only 250 mm.
  • Dodecahedron m|dod 360A:
    The dodecahedron is optimized for particularly high sound power at low mass.
  • Combination of the dodecahedrons m|dod 360A and m|dod 360HTA:
    The tweeter dodecahedron m|dod 360HTA supports the broadband operating m|dod 360A with a particularly high sound power in the frequency range from 4,000 Hz to 10,000 Hz.

Dodecahedron m|dod 250C

The dodecahedron m|dod 250C consists of a plastic sphere and twelve high sound quality speakers with neodymium magnets and weighs only 4.1 kg. Its handle makes it comfortable to carry by hand. The small diameter of 250 mm also allows positioning under limited space conditions. This makes the dodecahedron m|dod 250C suitable for many acoustic measurements of lightweight structures from the rail and automotive sectors. But it can also be used very well for sound insulation measurements in office buildings or in room acoustics.

With the spherical design, all normative requirements for the directional characteristic are met.

When excited with pink noise, a sound power level of Lw = 120 dB is achieved. Determined by the volume of the sphere, the resonant frequency of the dodecahedron m|dod 250C is about 200 Hz. Below the resonant frequency, the sound power declines with 12 dB/octave. The main part of the sound power is radiated within and above the resonance frequency.

The dodecahedron m|dod 250C can be operated with any audio amplifier with suitable impedance and power.

Dodecahedron m|dod 360A 

The dodecahedron m|dod 360A consists of a plastic sphere and twelve loudspeakers with neodymium magnets and weighs 10.2 kg. Its handle makes it comfortable to carry by hand. With a diameter of 360 mm and high sound power, the dodecahedron covers the classic application area of building and room acoustic measurements in situ and in test facilities.

With the spherical design, all normative requirements for the directional characteristic are met.

When excited with pink noise, a sound power level of Lw = 125 dB is achieved. In conjunction with an equalizer, which is already standard in many audio amplifiers, a very consistent frequency response from 160 Hz to 5,000 Hz and an additional boost of the power between 50 Hz and 125 Hz can be achieved.

The dodecahedron m|dod 250C can be operated with any audio amplifier with suitable impedance and power, whereas amplifiers with installed equalizers are favorable.

Set of dodecahedron m|dod 360A and m|dod 360HTA

In the automotive and rail vehicle sectors, but also in other industries, the frequency range above 5,000 Hz is also of great interest. For sound insulation measurements in the test stand, very high sound power levels are required in the high-frequency range, since the sound insulation of the components increases with frequency. For this special application, the tweeter (im DE: Hochton-!!!) dodecahedron m|dod 360HTA was developed to complement the broadband dodecahedron m|dod 360A.

With the selected ring radiators built into a sphere, all normative requirements for the directional characteristic are met even in the high-frequency range.

The frequency response of sound power of the dodecahedron set increases continuously above 1,000 Hz, in order to compensate, on the one hand, the increasing sound insulation of the components and, on the other hand, the increasing sound pressure level reduction due to air absorption. The crossover frequency between the broadband dodecahedron and the tweeter dodecahedron is 4,000 Hz.

The Dodecahedron set is supplied only with a suitable audio amplifier with an installed crossover, DSP and limiters to protect the speakers. The input signal into the amplifier is distributed in the amplifier to the output channels with the appropriate frequency filters.
